For most of us is Valentine´s Day a day to spend with the loved ones and giving to each other flowers, pralines, jewellery and perfume. For the global trade it´s a good possibility to boost the businnes. But nobody really knows the history of this special day. There are several versions but the most common one is about a Christian called Valentinus.
The story of Valentine’s Day begins in the third century .At that time in the ancient Rom it was prohibited to Christians to practice their religion. Christianity was seen as a crime punishable by death. But Valentinus was dedicated to the ideals of Christ; not even the threat of death could keep him from practicing his beliefs. One day he was arrested and imprisoned.
Valentinus had a pretty, young daugher who´s name was Julia. Julia was blind since her birth. She only saw the world through her father´s eyes. Valentinus read stories to her, described everything around to her.
On the eve of his death Valentinus wrote a last note to Julia. He signed it, „From your Valentine.“ His sentence was carried out the next day, February 14, 270 A.D.
Now you lerned some history ;). The lesson in this story is that you don´t have to wait until Valentine´s Day to tell someone how much they mean to you. Life is short.
